A PTE Academic Canada score of 79 will not let you apply for permanent residence through Express Entry. Not a 79, not an 85, not a perfect 90. Most coaching centres in Delhi, Hyderabad, and Chandigarh will not tell you that before they collect their fee.
Since January 30, 2024, IRCC accepts PTE Core for economic immigration and PTE Academic for study permits and university admission. Two different tests. Book the wrong one, and you have burned CAD 330 to 340 (or INR 18,900 in India) with no single-section retake and no fee credit.
This PTE Academic Canada guide gives you the 60-second decision tree, a sourced score minimum table for 13 Canadian universities, and a sequencing strategy that keeps your PR pathway open after PGWP. Every number is cited to Pearson, IRCC, or a university admission page.
PTE Academic vs PTE Core for Canada: The 60-Second Decision
This is not an academic distinction. It is a binary choice with a dollar stake.
PTE Academic is the test for university admission and study permit applications. More than 90 percent of Canadian DLIs accept it, including UBC, University of Toronto, McGill, Waterloo, and McMaster. PTE Core is the test for Canadian economic immigration: Express Entry, Provincial Nominee Programs, open work permits, and any PR stream. IRCC added PTE Core to its approved general-purpose test list on January 30, 2024.
Ask yourself one question: am I applying for a study permit, or am I applying for PR? The answer sets your test.
- Study permit only (no PR plans): book PTE Academic at the score your target DLI requires.
- PR only (already in Canada or applying direct): book PTE Core. PTE Academic is not on the IRCC approved list for PR.
- Study now, PGWP then PR later: book PTE Academic now for admission, and plan to book PTE Core or IELTS General Training later when you build your Express Entry profile. PTE Academic scores are valid for 2 years, so a score taken today will almost certainly expire before you need PR language proof.
That is the decision. What trips students up is not the rule, it is the coaching blog that calls every PTE test “the same.” It is not. And the cost of conflating them shows up in the next section.
What PTE Academic Canada Measures in 2026 (the New 2-Hour Format)
Throw out any prep book printed before 2026. Pearson shortened the test.
PTE Academic Canada testing now runs roughly 2 hours total, down from about 3 hours, with no scheduled break. The test is fully computer delivered, AI scored with human quality monitoring, and results land in your account within 48 hours (often 24 to 72). The score scale is 10 to 90, valid for 2 years from the test date.
You will face 50 to 70 questions across more than 20 task types. The four skills (Speaking, Writing, Reading, Listening) are scored in an integrated way, so a single task can contribute to two skill scores at once. A “summarize spoken text” task touches Listening and Writing together. That is why a strong reader who freezes on speaking can still post a balanced score, and why a strong speaker with weak grammar can get a nasty surprise.
PTE Academic Canada test takers get the fastest turnaround of the big three in elapsed time from arrival to results, which matters when your LOA deadline is close. Knowing whether your target score clears your target university is another question, and that is the table nobody in the SERP actually sources.
PTE Academic Canada Score Minimums for 13 Universities (Sourced Table)
Walk through Arjun’s situation, because this is where most students lose CAD 330.
Arjun, a 22-year-old computer science graduate from Pune, applies to McMaster for a Master of Engineering. A coaching blog lists “65 overall” as the McMaster PTE Academic Canada minimum. He books for a 65 target and scores 66. Admissions replies: the program requires 70 overall with 60 per band. He retakes (CAD 340, full fee, no partial refund), loses two weeks of prep, and pushes intake from Fall to Winter. The blog was wrong. The McMaster admission page was right.
Do not make that mistake. Below is the current PTE Academic minimum snapshot for 13 Canadian DLIs, cross-checked against admission pages. Program and faculty can override these numbers, so treat the table as a starting point, not a final answer.
| University | PTE Academic Minimum (Undergrad, Typical) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| University of Toronto | 60 to 70+ | 65 common for arts and science undergrad; varies by faculty |
| University of British Columbia (UBC) | 65 overall | No section below 60 |
| McGill University | 65 overall | Typical undergraduate minimum |
| University of Waterloo | 63 overall | No section below 60, program specific |
| McMaster University | 70 overall | Most undergraduate programs |
| Western University | 60 overall | Typical minimum, higher for some programs |
| Queen’s University | 65 overall | Typical undergrad minimum |
| York University | 58 to 60 overall | Lower floor than most U15 schools |
| Concordia University | 59 overall | Typical undergrad minimum |
| Simon Fraser University (SFU) | 65 overall | Typical undergrad |
| University of Alberta | 61 overall | 60 minimum per band |
| University of Calgary | 59 to 65 overall | Depends on program |
| Universite de Montreal | Program specific | French tests preferred; PTE accepted for English-taught graduate programs |
When your target DLI does not publish a PTE Academic Canada minimum on its admission page, contact admissions in writing and ask for the PTE equivalent of the published IELTS Academic minimum. Get the reply in email. That paper trail protects you if a reviewer later questions your score.
Can’t hit your target minimum? An English pathway program is the fallback, not a retake cycle. Before you decide, though, you need to know how PTE scores map to IELTS and TOEFL, because most programs publish minimums in the latter two.

PTE scores look lower than IELTS in absolute numbers. That is a scale artefact, not a difficulty signal. The scales line up as follows, using Pearson’s official score comparison tool.
| PTE Academic | IELTS Academic | TOEFL iBT |
|---|---|---|
| 50 | 5.5 | 46 to 59 |
| 58 | 6.5 | 72 to 78 |
| 65 | 7.0 | 94 to 101 |
| 73 | 7.5 | 102 to 109 |
| 79 | 8.0 | 110 to 114 |
CELPIP General is worth flagging, even though it is not a typical study test. IRCC accepts CELPIP General for PR, not for study permits at most DLIs. Researching test options for an English pathway that leads into PGWP and then PR? The full breakdown sits in our TOEFL vs IELTS vs PTE Core for Canada comparison. For CLB mapping (which matters for PR points), a PTE Core score of roughly 60 to 69 per skill maps to CLB 8, the threshold most Express Entry candidates target. That is PTE Core, not PTE Academic. Do not confuse the two.
Knowing the conversion is half the battle. The other half is understanding what changed under the study permit rules late last year, because the processing route affects how fast your PTE Academic Canada score report needs to land in your application file.
What Changed After SDS Ended on November 8, 2024
The Student Direct Stream (SDS) and Nigeria Student Express (NSE) closed on November 8, 2024 at 2:00 pm EST. IRCC archived both programs. Any older guide referencing SDS processing in 20 days is stale.
What this means for you:
- All study permit applications since November 8, 2024 go through the regular stream.
- Regular stream processing takes longer than the old 20 day SDS window, often 8 weeks or more depending on your country and visa office.
- Proof of funds requirements are more flexible than SDS (no mandatory GIC), but officers apply more scrutiny to documentation overall.
- PTE Academic is still accepted by DLIs under the regular stream. The change was to the application route, not to which English test you can submit.
The practical effect is that your SOP, proof of funds, and LOA package need to be stronger than under SDS. Our 2026 study permit documentation guide has the full checklist. Your PTE Academic Canada score report is one line item in that file. Get it right the first time. The cost of getting it wrong is next.
How Much PTE Academic Canada and India Testing Costs (and the Real Price of the Wrong Test)
PTE Academic Canada testing costs approximately CAD 330 to 340 in 2026, depending on location and applicable taxes. In India, the fee is INR 18,900 inclusive of 18 percent GST, or INR 15,300 for the PTE Home version. PTE Core runs CAD 340 to 400 in Canada and INR 18,900 in India.
The real cost of the wrong test is retake fee plus extra prep weeks plus application delay. Pearson does not offer a single-section retake, so a 64 when you needed 65 means a full retake. IELTS does offer One Skill Retake. PTE does not.
Back to Arjun. Round two: he books PTE Core thinking it is newer and better, but McMaster accepts PTE Academic only. CAD 340 gone, 10 days lost booking the right test. Two mistakes, CAD 670 gone, both preventable with one 60-second decision at the start.

The Sequencing Strategy: PTE Academic Canada Now, PTE Core or IELTS General Later
Say you are 22, heading to a Canadian DLI for a two-year program, and planning to apply for PR through Express Entry after your PGWP. The PTE Academic Canada sequence that actually works looks like this.
- Now (pre-study permit): book PTE Academic Canada at the score your target DLI requires. Submit the score report with your study permit application.
- Year 1 and 2 of study: nothing on the language test front. Focus on grades, Canadian work experience, and a clean academic record.
- End of program, start of PGWP: apply for your PGWP (up to 3 years depending on program length). Your PTE Academic score is expired or close to expiring, which does not matter because IRCC does not accept it for PR anyway.
- Year 2 or 3 of PGWP: book PTE Core or IELTS General Training. Aim for CLB 9 or higher per skill to maximize your Express Entry CRS score. Our CLB 7 Is Not Enough guide shows how each CLB level adds or costs CRS points.
- Submit Express Entry profile: use the PR test score within its 2 year validity window.
This sequence keeps your total test spend manageable and ensures you never hold a score that cannot be used. The full PGWP-to-PR path, including the French shortcut that drops your CRS cutoff by up to 200 points, sits in our pathway to PR guide.
Is PTE Easier Than IELTS? Honest Answer From the Format Differences
Depends on who you are, honestly.
Where PTE Academic Canada testing is genuinely easier: no face-to-face Speaking examiner, everything is computer delivered, no handwriting, and results land in 48 hours versus 3 to 5 days for IELTS. The 2026 format is shorter at 2 hours versus IELTS Academic’s 2 hours 45 minutes. For introverts, strong typists, and students who get nervous in human interviews, PTE removes friction points.
Where PTE is harder: AI speaking scoring can be unpredictable for strong regional accents, and Reddit has many threads from Indian and Nigerian test takers who scored 85 on Reading and 62 on Speaking despite strong spoken English. Integrated task types require multitasking that IELTS does not test the same way. No one-skill retake is a meaningful downside when you are one point below a band minimum.
Pick PTE when you type fast, feel comfortable with AI scoring, and want 48-hour results. Pick IELTS when you prefer human Speaking examiners, want One Skill Retake flexibility, or have a strong accent that AI models may misinterpret. Leaning IELTS? Our IELTS preparation courses in Canada guide is the next read. Neither is the easy test. Both carry a CAD 330 tag and a 2 year shelf life, so pick on fit, not on a coaching blog’s angle.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is PTE Academic accepted for Canada PR?
No. IRCC accepts only PTE Core, IELTS General Training, CELPIP General, and (for French) TEF Canada and TCF Canada for economic immigration. PTE Academic is for study permits and university admission only. IRCC added PTE Core to the approved list effective January 30, 2024.
PTE Academic vs PTE Core, which one do I take?
When you are applying for a study permit or directly to a Canadian university, take PTE Academic. When you are applying for Express Entry, a PNP, or any PR stream, take PTE Core. When you plan to study first and apply for PR later through PGWP, start with PTE Academic now and plan to take PTE Core or IELTS General Training in year 2 or 3 of your PGWP.
Is PTE easier than IELTS?
It depends on the skill. PTE is faster, computer delivered, and has no face-to-face speaking. IELTS uses human Speaking examiners and offers a One Skill Retake option that PTE does not. Pick PTE when you are comfortable with AI scoring and want 48-hour results. Pick IELTS when you prefer human Speaking and want to retake a single section.
Does UBC accept PTE Academic Canada, and what is the minimum score?
Yes, UBC accepts PTE Academic. The typical undergraduate minimum is 65 overall with no section below 60. Verify against the UBC admission page for your specific program before booking, because minimums change per intake and per faculty.
How much does PTE Academic cost in Canada and India?
PTE Academic runs approximately CAD 330 to 340 at Canadian test centres in 2026, varying by location and tax. In India the fee is INR 18,900 including 18 percent GST, or INR 15,300 for the PTE Home version. PTE Core is priced at CAD 340 to 400 in Canada and INR 18,900 in India.
How long are PTE Academic scores valid?
Two years from your test date. Universities accept scores inside that window. When your study permit application takes longer than expected, confirm with your DLI that your score will still be inside the two year window on your intake date.
Can I use my PTE Academic score for PGWP or Express Entry once I graduate?
No. IRCC requires PTE Core or another approved general-purpose test for PR language proof. Your PTE Academic score report is only valid for admission and the study permit application. Plan to retake the appropriate PR test in year 2 or 3 of your PGWP.
What happens to my PTE Academic Canada plans now that SDS ended on November 8, 2024?
Your PTE Academic score is still accepted by DLIs under the regular study permit stream. What changed is the processing route, not the test. Expect longer processing than the old 20 day SDS window, and make sure your proof of funds and documentation are strong because regular stream officers apply more scrutiny.
